Nortegas awarded a prize for its R&D&I renewable natural gas project
The International Gas Union (IGU) has awarded the company the Innovation Prize in the “Gas and Renewables” category
The company’s project provides a new solution for the injection of biomethane or renewable gas in the natural gas distribution networks
Bilbao, 7 May 2018.- nortegas Energía Distribución has recently received the Innovation Prize for this project in the “Gas and Renewables” category, awarded by the International Gas Union (IGU). The prize is in recognition of the company’s solution, as part of the Smart Green Gas R&D&I project, to inject renewable gas or biomethane in the natural gas distribution network.
nortegas took the prize after competing in its category with a further 25 short-listed innovation projects. In addition to winning its category, it is the only Spanish company to be a prize-winner in this contest.
The company will be presented with the prize during the 27th World Gas Conference, which will be held in Washington from 25 to 29 June. Ángel Mª Gutiérrez, the nortegas manager of the Smart Green Gas R&D&I project, will showcase the prize-winning project to the leading representatives of the gas industry worldwide.
Biomethane is growing in importance as a “green” and alternative energy in Europe. nortegas‘s project allows -in a cost-effective, smart and automatic way – the dosed injection of this renewable gas to be mixed with the conventional gas, so that it complies with the standards required to be used in the natural gas distribution networks.
A simulation tool has thus been developed, in partnership with Tecnalia, to select the appropriate technologies to inject biomethane at Regulations and Measurement Stations. The gas sector will therefore be able to contribute to fostering the sustainable development goals proposed by the United Nations for 2030.
