NORTEGAS DONATES 52,500 KG OF FOOD TO THE FOOD BANKS OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY, CANTABRIA AND ASTURIAS

  • The company is to donate the total amount of travel expenses saved since the start of the State of Alarm, which will be divided between the food banks in the geographical areas where it operates.
  • This donation will allow a total of 52,500 kg of food to be purchased that the food banks in each province will distribute to vulnerable families.
  • Nortegas is thus showing its commitment to society in the geographical areas where it operates.

Nortegas, the second gas distributor in Spain and a company committed to the energy transition and the circular economy, which fosters different initiatives and activities around the new uses of gas and renewable-source gases, will donate 52,500 kg of food to the food banks of the Basque Country, Cantabria and Asturias to families made even more vulnerable by the Covid-19 crisis, as part of its commitment to the communities in which it is present.

In recent weeks, the food banks have been warning that they were running out of supplies as they have been unable to organise their usual food collections. Nortegas has therefore decided to donate the travel expenses saved since the start of the State of Alarm and thus support the communities in which it is present.

The 52,500 kg of food will include 15,000 litres of milk and baskets with essentials such as oil, pulses, milk, fruit juice, tinned fish and meat, coffee, rice, pasta, flour and baby products, including follow-on formula, cereal baby food and nappies.

Nortegas thus wants to show its support for the food banks’ work at a time when a large increase is expected in the number of families needing help to cover their basic needs. Thanks to this donation, the company is helping to cover the basic needs of many families in vulnerable situations.

Javier Contreras, the Nortegas Managing Director, stressed: “Nortegas’s responsibility as part of society is to do our best to help the communities in which we are present. We therefore believe it to be necessary to work with the food banks of the five provinces where we operate in order to reach the neediest. We are constantly working on new initiatives to support the community as much as we can”.

The Nortegas Covid-19 action plan

Since triggering its Covid-19 Action Plan, Nortegas has been focusing on implementing different initiatives to offset the economic impact of the current crisis on the business and economic fabric of the geographical areas in which it operates. The company has therefore brought forward the payment terms established with its suppliers during the state of alarm, meaning that it will pay its 629 suppliers their invoices early and they will not have to wait to the agreed payment date. Furthermore, not only has it adapted remote working for the internal staff to provide the service, but it has also adapted operations and has proposed initiatives to support its contractors to minimise the impact that Covid-19 is going to have on them. The appropriate safety measures and protocols are being applied in all cases.

On the other hand, Nortegas continues to guarantee natural gas supply continuity efficiently and safely. As it is an essential service, the distributor’s emergency team continues to daily monitor all the facilities in order to ensure a guaranteed supply to all customers.
